Healthy Working Life Expectancies of Mid-Aged and Older Koreans
Woo Hae-Bong

Abstract
Using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS) data, this study analyzes health and working lives in terms of the healthy working life expectancy for Korean adults aged 45 or older at the baseline. First, the healthy-working life expectancy at 45 is 16.49 years for men and 9.27 years for women, corresponding to less than one half and one fourth, respectively, of the total life expectancy. In comparison, unhealthy-nonworking and healthy-nonworking life expectancies are substantially high, indicating that middle-aged and older Koreans, in particular women, tend to spend a greater portion of their remaining lives in the non-employment state. Second, this study also finds significant educational variations in healthy aging and working lives. In particular, the data indicate that educational differentials are greatest in the healthy-nonworking state. More specially, both men and women with higher education are more likely to be in the nonworking state despite their good health status, compared to their counterparts with lower education. To the contrary, for both men and women, persons with lower education are more likely to work despite their poor health status.
